One year previously…

Perched on one of the flat rocks on the other side of the seawall, Charles and I were oblivious to the chaos behind us and the stench of the murky urban water. Not even the creepy-crawlies were able to intimidate us into leaving our hard earned spot to watch the 1st Pyromusical Competition at the Seaside Boulevard of Mall of Asia. The crowd was so thick that getting a good vantage point with a tripod sprawled on its three legs was hopeless despite having a VIP ticket (without dinner). Good thing we were able to squeeze ourselves passed the rows of tripods and spectators atop the seawall and onto the boulders of rock on the other side. A few minutes later, I heard Charles singing his national anthem Advance Australia Fair which was followed by a spectacular display of fireworks…

Last week…

A year after that first Pyromusical event, it was on again, and I was looking forward to seeing this spectacular event once more. I arrived back in Manila from a vacation overseas just in time for the last weekend of the 2nd Pyromusical Competition. Australia was the last to perform again, while Philippines capped the event with an impressive performance even though it wasn’t part of the 9 competing countries.

Australia brightened up the sky with smileys and colorful streaks of light slowly drifting down. Floating firework displays on the dark waters of Manila Bay and from the buildings of the Mall of Asia dancing to the tunes of the latest hits were some of the highlights from the Philippines. I enjoyed the performance of both countries. It seemed even more colorful and in synch with the accompanying tunes than the previous year’s fireworks display. China, United Kingdom and Japan emerged as the top 3 winners for this year’s event.
