Accommodation is usually the last thing I worry about whenever I visit a new place. I don’t really mind staying in the most Spartan lodge nor do I feel guilty when I indulge myself in fancy hotels once in a while. A hotel for me is just a place to rest and recharge after a day of adventure and exploration and I try to spend as little time there as possible whenever I am in a new place. My stay at Ponce Suites, however, was a unique experience that I certainly didn’t expect!
Ponce Suites Gallery Hotel should be a “must see place” in Davao rather than just an addition to its numerous choices of accommodation. This lodging slash function house slash art gallery is an attraction in itself and has more interesting things to see than the Davao Museum and most art galleries I have seen. This is probably the first hotel that I have stayed at where I wouldn’t mind just spending my day staring at its walls, ceiling and floors for hours without getting anxious to go out and see what the new place has in store for me.
The moment you arrive at the hotel premises, you are greeted by an interesting sculpture of an enormous durian with seeds in the female form, a tribal-inspired figure guarding the hotel’s doorway and a gigantic sculpture of the Philippine Eagle in the façade. I had to remind myself that we were just checking in our things that day and that our Davao sight-seeing trip hadn’t started yet. The Ponce’s façade is just a prelude to what awaits you inside – the interior overwhelms you with the sheer number of artworks that fill every nook and cranny of the hotel, the diversity of the subjects, and the materials and mediums used in the art pieces.
Each floor of the three-storey hotel is filled with different sizes of framed photos and paintings covering the walls from the ceiling down to the floor. The guestrooms and toilet walls aren’t spared either as well as the ceiling, which was decorated with crawling ants that were magnified a hundred fold. There were also interesting installation art made of various recycled materials, portrait sketches, paper maché and murals.
A stay in this hotel is a visual indulgence and a respite for a weary soul as well as a weary body. It’s a haven for those who appreciate modern art and for those who simply want to partake in a feast of visually stimulating works of art by Mindanao’s renowned artist Kublai Milan. You are challenged to embrace them freely and let them take you on a unique artistic sojourn, and not be offended and overwhelmed by the uncompromising expression of art that my not conform to the norms of the conservative!
Ponce Suites is located at Dona Vicenta Village in Bajada, Davao City. It has 30 fully air-conditioned private rooms, 5 function rooms, townhouses, and 3 café and bars. It has reasonably priced accommodation that offers more than just a comfortable stay. It’s something I would recommend for the art enthusiasts and for those who want a truly unique hotel experience.
